Central Portugal is a region of remarkable contrasts: Roman ruins and Gothic monasteries, sleepy schist villages and vibrant university cities, wild mountains and golden beaches. While it often sits in the shadow of Lisbon and Porto, those who wander inland or follow the coast from Figueira da Foz to Nazaré will find a Portugal of slow pleasures, rich history, and delightful surprises.
Central Portugal, like a good bottle of aged Dão wine, has a rich, complex history with a robust finish. Sandwiched between the bustle of Lisbon and the baroque beauty of the north, this region has been the quiet overachiever of Portuguese heritage for centuries — a land where stone fortresses, Roman roads, Templar secrets and monastic wonders casually coexist.

The Romans, arriving in the early 3rd Century CE, laid roads straighter than a grumpy monk’s walking stick, and introduced vineyards, olive groves, and baths that still whisper their spa secrets in places like Conímbriga. When they packed up their togas, the Visigoths and Moors danced in, adding layers of mystery and architectural flourish. And then came the Christian reconquest, charging down from the north like a medieval road trip — sword-wielding knights, pious pilgrims, and the odd power-hungry bishop in tow.
It was during this time that Central Portugal became a land of stone castles, churches, monasteries, and entire villages chiselled from the landscape. The Monastery of Batalha rose like a Gothic dream in the 14th century, while Tomar became the headquarters of the Knights Templar (yes, the same secretive lot that Dan Brown made fashionable). Coimbra, the region’s grande dame, crowned the period by becoming Portugal’s first capital and housing one of the oldest universities in Europe.
Today, this historical tapestry is wonderfully walkable. Towns like Óbidos, Alcobaça, and Monsanto feel like open-air museums, except you can sip wine and sweet pastries as you wander through them. Central Portugal doesn’t shout about its history — it simply invites you in, pours you a glass, and lets you discover the stories written in stone, tile, and vine.
Home to Portugal’s oldest university, Coimbra exudes youthful energy and ancient gravitas in equal measure. Explore the Joanina Library, wander the atmospheric old town, and catch a student-led fado performance.
A town carved by the Knights Templar, Tomar is home to the incredible Convento de Cristo, a fortress-monastery that melds Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architecture into one jaw-dropping experience.
A fairy-tale walled town complete with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and an annual chocolate festival. A sip of the local cherry liqueur, ginjinha, is a must.
This coastal gem is famous for its monster waves (surf legends take note) and traditional fishing culture. Visit the clifftop Sítio for panoramic views and a taste of authentic coastal Portugal.
| Castelo Rodrigo – Historic villages of Portugal (Programa de Aldeias Históricas)
The Historic villages of Portugal (Programa de Aldeias Históricas) is a restoration programme started in 1991 and encompasses twelve small, yet statically important, ancient villages within the Beira Interior region of Central Portugal. Each settlement involved in the project has, in some way, played a pivotal role in the creation and defence of Portugal throughout history. Originally encompassing ten villages the programme has since been extended to twelve and includes: Almeida, Belmonte, Castelo Mendo, Castelo Novo, Castelo Rodrigo, Idanha-a-Velha, Linhares da Beira, Marialva, Monsanto, Piodão, Sortelha and Trancoso.
Ironically it was peacetime that brought these splendid villages into decline. The regional economy collapsed and the young moved to more urban areas where the way of life is more prosperous and easy. Little by little buildings emptied, populations became older and the villages began to crumble. Since its inauguration the Programa de Aldeias Históricas restoration scheme has not only restored the physical aspects of the villages but also improved public access, and transport, encouraging tourism and thus reanimating the life of these historical homesteads. Today the old people who remained here rub shoulders with visitors eager to witness a living snapshot into the past. [ More About ► ]

The Costa de Prata or Silver Coast acquired its name from the reflected sun-ray glint that sparkles on the waves that crash on the dramatic coastline. The Costa de Prata runs 240 kilometres (150 mi) from Esmoriz in the North to Torres Vedras bordering the Sintra Coast close to Lisbon.
The main coastal towns include Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Nazaré and Peniche. Inland one finds the great towns and cities of Batalha, Caldas da Rainha, Fátima, Leiria, Marinha Grande , Óbidos and Tomar Just off the coast of Peniche is the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve island of Berlengas. The Costa Prata is being marketed as an exciting alternative to the Algarve, where prices are much cheaper and resorts are less commercial and developed. Here holiday homes are being built rather than hotels leaving the skyline unspoiled and the real estate market is very vibrant. There are plenty of fine beaches and places of interest to suit all kinds of visitor and the area is well served by a good road network. [ More About ► ]
